Whereas
- In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, peaceful Muslim citizens gathered in public to express their love and devotion through the “I Love Mohammad ﷺ” March, exercising their democratic right to peaceful assembly and free expression.
- The demonstration called by Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan, President of Ittehad-e-Millat Council against “I love Mohammad” poster controversy created by criminalizing the act, saw authorities conducting a flag march and deployed heavy police force.
- The said assembly on Friday, 26th September 2025, was met with unwarranted and harsh police action, despite the demonstrators remaining non-violent and their expression being rooted in their faith, identity, and constitutional freedoms under Articles 19 and 25.
- Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan, a respected descendant of Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi. He is a distinguished member of AIMMM, and the President of Ittehad-e-Millat Council, was placed under house arrest during this agitation, in an act widely perceived as an attempt to silence legitimate dissent and restrict religious leadership.
- Such measures reflect a growing trend of criminalizing peaceful expression of Muslim identity and restricting constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, further deepening alienation and mistrust between the community and state machinery.
Therefore, this Meeting of AIMMM resolves as follows:
- AIMMM strongly condemns the police action in Bareilly against peaceful demonstrators whose only call was “I Love Mohammad ﷺ,” and affirms that such actions are a direct violation of their fundamental rights to freedom of religion, conscience, and peaceful assembly.
- AIMMM further condemns the house arrest of Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan, noting that it constitutes both disrespect to a senior religious leader and a deliberate attempt to stifle democratic dissent.
- AIMMM demands that the Government of Uttar Pradesh immediately:
- Withdraw all false or politically motivated cases registered against peaceful protestors.
- End arbitrary restrictions on Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan and restore his full freedom of movement and expression.
- Issue directives to the police to ensure restraint, accountability, and sensitivity when handling matters involving peaceful religious expression.
- AIMMM calls upon the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Minorities Commission to take Suo-motu cognizance of the incident and investigate the abuse of state power in Bareilly.
- AIMMM reaffirms its solidarity with the Ittehad-e-Millat Council and all organizations that stand for peaceful assertion of Muslim religious and cultural identity.
- AIMMM cautions that repeated acts of repression against peaceful demonstrations not only undermine the secular and democratic fabric of India but also set a dangerous precedent of delegitimizing constitutionally protected freedoms.
Conclusion
This General Meeting declares that AIMMM will continue to stand by its member organizations, community leaders, and the common people in their democratic struggles, and will not remain silent in the face of police excesses and arbitrary restrictions on religious expression. AIMMM pledges to pursue democratic, legal, and constitutional avenues to ensure justice in this matter.
